The initial idea of assembling furniture with a locking system using SMA was influenced by mechanisms of everyday locking objects and wood joints as well as existing ready to assemble furniture. Taking account of that nature of SMA, where the action of shape memory alloys appeared to be most effective in linear form, lead to designing simple locking mechanisms.
Keeping values of ready-to-assemble furniture and refining common difficulties consumers experienced together with elements of traditional furniture, arrived in design goals of the project; easy assembly and disassembly, simple yet detailed material and finish, seamless joints, flat shipping, no specific tools involved.

Toolless joinery system, ‘Affix’ is a new assembly mechanism for furniture.
The small unit size of 1” long and ½” wide ¼” thick, hold large structures into place. Composed of two dumb materials pushing linear hook-like structures outwards locking the joint and one SMA wire that pulls two dumb materials inside when the heat is applied for disassembly.
The system not involving any specific tools enables accessible assembly and disassembly procedures. Seamless joints generate a clean finish offering modern and exclusive appearance.
Configuration of the product minimizes steps of construction and avoid confusion or loss of parts. Enhancing the joy of consumers achieved via completion bringing a sense of pride and competence of assembling own furniture.
Imagined being series of furniture being able to extend, possibly available for residence or business for instance galleries.
